Caring for floors in a sandy city: the ten-minute habits that add years
Sand is the one thing every Dubai floor has in common. Managing it is most of the maintenance.
At the door
A coarse mat outside and a soft mat inside catch most of the grit. Shoes off is better still. This single habit doubles the life of any wear layer or finish.
The vacuum
A soft-head vacuum, no beater bar on hard floors, two or three times a week. Sand under a chair leg is sandpaper.
The mop
Damp, not wet; neutral cleaner, not vinegar, bleach or a steam mop. Wood, laminate and stone all object to soaking; marble objects to acid.
The sun
Blinds or window film on unshaded west glass. It protects printed floors from fading and wood from drying, and it lowers the AC bill besides.
